OpenSSL is a widely used open-source library for secure communication and cryptography. It supports protocols such as TLS and QUIC, as well as algorithms such as RSA and ECDSA, and is a central component of many open-source and commercial applications. The project aims to solve two main problems: First, to fix a known security vulnerability in the BIGNUM component that is susceptible to timing side-channel attacks. Second, to reduce the number of open GitHub issues to strengthen the long-term maintenance and security of OpenSSL.
